My Story

This is the rags-to-riches story, from the beginning to the present. Part two of the Prosperity Equation is my personal story of how a kid from the west side of Jacksonville busted out of a bad situation, built three corporations, and made a fortune.

There are many lessons hidden inside of the stories about the traps and pitfalls you will encounter on the road to wealth. From humble beginnings to the heady elation of success, from celebration to the sobering downfall, then climbing back up out of the abyss, my story is filled with the kind of personal adventures only a real entrepreneur could appreciate.

Broke, Divorced, and Angry

April 28, 1982. I was broke. Divorced. Angry. I was sneaking out of my apartment in the middle of the night, packing my every possession into my old buy-here, pay-here car. I wrapped the mattress and box springs in clear plastic and tied them to the roof.

It was a dark, drizzly night. I was depressed and lonely; my credit was ruined, and my life was in the toilet. With less than four hundred dollars to my name, I was leaving my home in Jacksonville, Florida, the city where I grew up. I was leaving behind lifelong friends and family, some great memories and some bad memories.

Driving through the night toward Atlanta, a place I had only visited once in my life, I had a lot of time to think. Here I was thirty-five years old, starting over again...
